Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to help you feel more confident about starting therapy.
Whether you’re exploring therapy for the first time or simply have questions about how counseling works, we’re here to help. Below are answers to some of the questions we hear most often. If you don’t find what you’re’re looking for, our team is always happy to help.
Scheduling your first appointment is easy. You can request an appointment online, call one of our offices, or contact our team by phone or email. We’ll gather some basic information, answer your questions, verify your insurance (if applicable), and help match you with the clinician who best fits your needs.
You don’t have to figure it out on your own. Our team will learn about your concerns, goals, preferences, and scheduling needs before recommending a clinician whose experience and approach are the best fit. Finding the right therapeutic relationship is important, and we’re here to help.
If we’re not in-network with your insurance plan, you may choose to use our self-pay option. Depending on your benefits, you may also be able to submit claims for out-of-network reimbursement. Our team is happy to discuss your options.
Yes. Many of our clinicians offer secure telehealth appointments for clients located in Alabama. Telehealth provides the same quality care as in-person therapy while offering added convenience and flexibility.
Your first session is an opportunity to get to know your therapist and share what brings you to counseling. Together, you’ll discuss your concerns, goals, relevant history, and answer any questions you may have. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out—your therapist will guide the conversation at a pace that feels comfortable.
Yes. Your privacy is very important to us. Everything discussed in therapy is confidential except in specific situations required by law, such as concerns about safety, suspected abuse or neglect, or when ordered by a court. Your therapist will review these limits of confidentiality with you during your first appointment.
Appointments are reserved exclusively for you. We ask that you provide at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations may be subject to a $50 fee, and missed appointments (no-shows) may result in a $100 fee. These fees are not covered by insurance.
Not at all. Therapy isn’t just for people in crisis. Many people come to counseling to improve relationships, manage stress, build healthier boundaries, navigate life transitions, or simply invest in their personal growth and emotional well-being.
Absolutely. Everyone has a first session. You don’t need to know exactly what to say or have everything figured out before you begin. Our goal is to create a welcoming, judgment-free environment where you can feel comfortable taking the first step.
Finding the right therapist is an important part of the counseling process. If you feel another clinician may be a better fit, please let us know. We’re happy to discuss your concerns and help connect you with another member of our team whenever possible.
Work in Progress Counseling is not a crisis or emergency service. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, have thoughts of harming yourself or others, or need immediate assistance, call 911, go to your nearest emergency room, or call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, for immediate support.
